You say unicameral, I say bicameral…let’s call the whole thing off…

Kenton over at 750 Volts is reporting that Del. Mark Cole has introduced a bill amending our Commonwealth’s constitution coverting our legislature from a bicameral one to a unicameral one.  You can read Kenton’s post here

You can check out House Joint Resolution 585 here

Friends, what we need from our Republican General Assembly are real, viable, substantial, specific solutions to specific problems facing our Commonwealth.  It’s no secret that I believe transportation is the gravest problem we have and I’ve discussed a possible solution in past posts.

The last thing that we need right now are silly, time wasting initiatives like this that 1. do nothing but serve as distractions from the problems we need to solve and 2. would undermine the wonderful (but sometimes slow) legislative process given to us by our forebearers.

Currently this bill’s committee assignment is pending…it’ll probably go to something like General Laws, Privaleges & Elections, etc.  Whatever committee ends up receiving this bill, I hope they give it the fast trip to File 13 it so richly deserves.

This idea comes from an argument Del. Cole had with Sen. Chichester last year. He basically ended the argument by saying we should just get rid of the Senate all together.

Guess he puts his money where his mouth is. I’d guess the resolution will last about 15 minutes when they convene 2007 session.

Not worth the paper it’s printed on. The legislative process, especially the Constitutional amendment process is not the place to prove a point. If Del. Cole can’t find some other way to pitch a fit and to use his time I suggest he step down.

We will not get solutions to the Commonwealth’s problems as long as House members such as Jeff “Screw transportation” Frederick, Michele “McQuagmire” McQuigg, Scott “Roads, huh” Lingamfelter remain in power. McQuagmire is particularly offensive since she voted for 60,000 housing units while on the Board of County Supervisors in Prince William County.

To paraphrase Dan Akroyd, a colleague of Chevy Chase — that great President Ford impersonator, “Harry, you ignorant [insert your choice of derogative here].” (Thanks for the correction, Jay.)

The delegates you just mentioned want to commit 100% of any surplus to transportation while Gov. Timmy! just wants to commit 50%. And given that it has been years since McQuigg was on the BOCS, those 60K housing units were actually needed at the time.

Jim–I think Dan Akroyd coined that phrase on the Weekend Report opposite Jane Curtain ;-)

Harry–Why don’t you exercise your rights to find and run a candidate against our people if they’re causing you so much abdominal distention? BTW, our transportation crisis is waaay to big to blame on just a group of Republican legislators. This is a caldera that’s been brewing for the last 20-30 years. If memory serves, your folks (I’m assuming you’re a Democrat…pls. advise if incorrect), ran the legislative show for over 100 years until we took over in 1999. Now, don’t get me wrong. We Republicans haven’t done enough to solve this problem, but there’s plenty of blame to be distributed to both sides of the aisle. The point of my post is we need to stop the blame gaming, stop these silly legislative wild goose chases like the one suggested by Del. Cole and tackle this issue head on and make some really tough decisions.
