It is being reported that a member of Senator Webb’s staff does not think the Capitol Police are alert. This staffer is wrong.

UPDATE from Drudge Report:
SENATE STAFFER BUSTED FOR CARRYING WEBB’S LOADED GUN… Phillip Thompson, executive assistant to Senator James Webb (D-VA ), has been arrested by Capitol Hill Police on Monday for ‘inadvertently’ holding the senator’s loaded gun, according to a person close to the investigation. A Senate staffer reports that Thompson was arrested for carrying the gun in a bag through security into a Senate office building while the Senator was parking his car. Thompson was booked for carrying a pistol without a license (CPWL) and for possessing unregistered ammunition. According to congressional rules, congressmen and senators, not staff, are allowed to have a gun on federal property. Developing…
UPDATE 2: NBC4 has more details.
UPDATE 3: When in doubt, blame the aide –
Statement by Jessica Smith, Webb Communications Director:“To our knowledge, this incident was an oversight by the Senator’s aide. Phillip Thompson is a former Marine, a long-term friend and trusted employee of the Senator. We are still awaiting facts.”
UPDATE 4: FOX News has more.

If Webb was aware that his staffer had a gun, this is a serious case of negligence.
I still wonder why Democrats have gotten behind him. They complain about Republicans liking Joe Lieberman for only one issue, then they do the same with James Webb.

This really is delicious. Senator Thinskin apparently considers carrying a loaded pistol and two additional loaded lips of ammo a mere “oversight” that should be forgiven because the idiot in question is an ex-Marine (I know, I know, as the Grandson of a man who stormed the beach and was wounded twice on Iwo Jima, I know there are no ex-Marines or former Marines, but I think any guy who actively supports the subversion and defeat of a US military operation probably deserves to be labelled an ex-Marine).
A couple of points:
1. I love the Second Amendment. It is not a coincidence that every totalitarian regime that came to power in the 20th Century enacted draconian restrictions that prevented private gun ownership. It is also not a coincidence that DC had both the most draconian gun laws and highest murder rate in the country for large chunks of the Eighties, Nineties and Aughties. With that said, I can not imagine having such a casual attitude towards gun possession that I would foget that I was carrying a loaded pistol and two additional clips through a security checkpoint at the US FREAKING CAPITOL!!! Anyone who could forget such information is probably too mentally challenged to be allowed to live outside of an institution or group home.
2. Does being a Marine automatically give someone a pass in Jim Webb’s world? As is often pointed out by Marine DIs, Charles Whitman and Lee Harvey Oswald were both Marines. Should we forgive them too because they once wore the globe & anchor? Just checking.
This is just further evidence of the fact that Jim Webb is a blithering idiot and his staff is even less intelligent–if that is possible. I wonder if we can expect a long series of articles from Chucky Todd, written at the behest of the Bride of Chucky, excusing this inexcusable, idiotic blunder by the Webbies.
That was truly awesome, Rittinger….
We try our best.
