Whatever credibility that Dr. James Dobson may have ever had is in the toilet.
Focus on the Family founder James Dobson appeared to throw cold water on a possible presidential bid by former Sen. Fred Thompson while praising former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is also weighing a presidential run, in a phone interview Tuesday.
“Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson said of Thompson. “[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian; at least that’s my impression,” Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party’s conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination.
. . .
In a follow-up phone conversation, Focus on the Family spokesman Gary Schneeberger stood by Dobson’s claim. He said that, while Dobson didn’t believe Thompson to be a member of a non-Christian faith, Dobson nevertheless “has never known Thompson to be a committed Christian—someone who talks openly about his faith.”
“We use that word—Christian—to refer to people who are evangelical Christians,” Schneeberger added.
I guess that under that definition Ronald Reagan wasn’t a Christian either. Who is Dobson to run around saying he knows what is in Thompson’s or anyone else’s heart? Who is he to pass judgment? This sort of nonsense that Dobson is spewing is what too often turns the average voter off from the GOP, just as MoveOn.org and DailyKos turns them off from the Dems.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Dobson blew it on this one.

Funny, Thompson doesn’t LOOK Jewish! LOL
By and large, “evangelical” Christians do not believe that any person other than another “evangelical” is a Christian, period. They do not question “how much” of a Christian or “how good” of a Christian you are – you are NOT a Christian.
To an evangelical, a non-evangelical who calls himself a Christian might as well be Jewish or Muslim or Hindu or Buddhist.
The thoughts Dobson expressed tie in directly with those of Robertson’s flock (and university) who were commenting that Mitt Romney, because he is Mormon, is as far from Christian beliefs as one can get.
Yeah, Dobson is getting so powerful he might be thinking he is untouchable like Joe McCarthy. I thought it was a sin to cast judgement?
Okay to all of you who are on attack for the Evangelical Christian remark. Let’s disect this. According to Websters Dictionary Evangelical is “pertaining to or in keeping with the gospel and its teachings.” I copied and pasted that form the website http://www.dictionary.com. A Christian is a follower of Christ. So wouldn’t a follower of Christ keep with the gospel and its teachings (The stroy of Christ’s Life and his teachings)? I could care less what your denomination is Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Interdenominational, etc, a Christian is a follower of christ.
Does Dr. Dobson know for sure who is and isn’t a Christian? No . . . only God can say that for sure. But Dr. Dobson can give his opinon as to whether or not a person past behaviors show them to be a Christian. After all I can claim to be whatever I want to, but my actions will either support or not support my claim.
