Since more than one of Virginia Virtucon’s contributors live and vote in the 28th Senate District, we have taken a particular interest in the race for the Republican nomination for the seat. We view this seat as a pivotal seat for conservatives to pick up a new voice in the Virginia State Senate. With the departure of Senator Chichester the seat will certainly take on a new perspective in Virginia politics.
To begin the discussion and debate of the 28th District we are offering candidates for the Republican nomination the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas with us and the rest of the blogosphere. The first candidate to participate is Jon Myers.
Jon is a decorated Marine who served in Iraq. Having completed his obligation to the Marine Corps, Jon is now Director of Business Operations for Alutiiq International. We asked Jon 9 questions. Below are the questions followed by his responses.
1. What can you tell Virginia Virtucon readers about Jon Myers that we can not find in your bio posted on your website ? (i.e. hobbies, favorite television show, favorite book, childhood memories, etc.) Remember we love pop-culture so if you to are a fan of 80’s rock, sit-coms and the occasional quote from Sixteen Candles do share.
Answer:
Hobbies: Golf, playing guitar, working outside on my property, and buying implements for my tractor that I rarely use just because I like shiny machines.
Favorite television show: The Office.
Favorite movies: Office Space (“I believe you have my stapler”), Caddy Shack (“So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice”), and Full Metal Jacket (“does this mean Ann Margaret is not coming?”)
Favorite foods: (in order of preference) Ice cream, fried chicken, and anything chocolate
Favorite band: Steely Dan
Favorite childhood memory: I still remember the first time that nobody told me it was time for bed, left me to watch television, and went upstairs before me. I knew at that point that I had finally “arrived.”
2. The current Senator representing the 28th district is not held in particular high regard with conservatives throughout the state. Many conservative activists and voters of the 28th district are excited to have the opportunity to fill the seat with a consistent conservative. Some may be weary of statements like . . “he is tolerant of other viewpoints and able to work with leaders from both sides of the aisle to accomplish . . .” which can be interpreted as conservative principles will be compromised. Will you hold ground for conservatives and not compromise conservative principles just for the sake of passing legislation?
Answer: I don’t agree that a lot of conservatives or voters in general for that matter, believe that somebody who says that they know to work well with others is actually saying that they will sacrifice their conservative values just to pass legislation. The people who get results are the ones who are able to persuade others to their point of view without alienating them while at the same time never compromising conservative values. People want leaders who are able to persuade rather than those who refuse to participate in the process because they don’t get their way. For example, I was at a Republican meeting recently at which one of the participants declared that he intended to delay the proceedings “all night” if he didn’t get his way, and that he was prepared to take this course of action because he was “good at it” and that this was “part of the process.” This is not how you achieve results and persuade others.
3. Transportation issues have dominated Virginia politics for many years. However, under the Issues section of your website Transportation is listed as the seventh issue (editor’s note: there is no indication on the website that the issues are listed by priority or any other criteria.). Since Transportation is such an important issue for Virginia voters why does it not appear to be a prominent issue for your campaign?
Answer: The issues on my page are not priority-ordered; they are all of equal importance to me. Let me be clear on one thing: I am not a “politician.” I am a leader who is participating in a democratic process in order to be afforded the opportunity to lead. A politician panders to the constituency, trying to say the right thing to score points. I acknowledge that transportation is a critical issue in this region. As I say on my webpage, I intend to ensure that all of the milestones and measures set up in the recently passed transportation bill are enacted in a timely manner. But it comes down to this: there are two kinds of people, those who talk, and those who act. I am the latter. It is now time to implement the plan, to ensure that it is working, and to adjust as necessary. If there is one thing I learned as a leader of Marines, it’s that at a certain point you have to leave the planning phase and enter the execution phase. Now is the time to implement the transportation plan and give it a chance to work and stop wasting the taxpayers’ time debating or playing “armchair quarterback.” It is also important as a legislator to remember that no one issue should be allowed to dominate the discussion in order to pander for votes. There are many issues of importance to constituents across the entire 28th district and all of them must be addressed.
4. Staying with Transportation for another question. Many areas of the 28th district are some of the fastest growing areas of Virginia and even fastest growing areas of the entire country. What are your proposals for improving the transportation infrastructure in the area? Do you support HOV lane extensions into the Rappahannock area from Northern Virginia on I-95? Do view HOT lanes as an adequate improvement to the I-95/I-395 corridor to provide a long-term fix to traffic congestion along the route? What about VRE – what improvements do you see being necessary to improve service on VRE?
Answer: As a daily user of the HOV lanes, I am uniquely qualified to present an opinion on their use. This experience will also serve me well should I be given the opportunity to participate in the legislation process as it relates to transportation. I wholeheartedly support the extension of HOV lanes into the Rappahannock area from Northern Virginia. These lanes are beneficial in that they reduce overall traffic congestion and encourage carpooling, vanpooling, and the like. I am not convinced that HOT lanes are the best solution to the traffic congestion issue. What we are going to see with the HOT lanes is the continued practice of individual drivers, only now they will clog the HOV lanes as well. While HOT lanes will initially cut down on HOV “cheaters,” what we will eventually see is an increase in drivers who can afford the HOT lanes in addition to corporate pay packages that include money for yearly HOT fees.
As a commuter, there are two reasons I don’t use the VRE on a daily basis: price and timeliness. VRE prices need to be kept at an equitable level so that it is a more feasible option. Additionally, I would propose that VRE incorporate more use of “express trains” that make fewer or no stops.
5. Taxes are always a hot issue for conservative voters. During the Warner administration taxes were increased during a time that the state was running a surplus in the name of transportation improvement. During the most recent legislative session a new transportation package was passed that many view as a significant tax increase. Do you support the idea of raising taxes when the state is running a surplus? How would you propose providing services that voters demand without raising taxes? Are there any times you would see the need to raise taxes and if so what types of taxes would you target?
Answer: My number one fiscal priority is to keep taxes low and equitable, while not impeding critical programs. And of course, I certainly do not support any tax increases at a time when the state is taking in more money that it is spending. I am particularly adept at managing large budgets. I have managed an 80 million dollar budget for the last five years, actually turning a deficit to a surplus without the addition of any revenue. I did this by budget review, elimination of waste, and maximization of spending. My plan for paying Virginia’s expenses would include three steps. First, I would conduct or commission a thorough, non-partisan review of the entire Virginia budget to eliminate waste and duplication and free up funds that are being spent on programs that the majority of Virginians have not asked for. Secondly, I would eliminate waste, pork, and redundancy. Finally, I would ensure that funds being spent were being spent wisely and effectively.
No matter what the circumstances, my first priority would be to find a way to pay for programs without raising taxes. With an effectively managed budget, I don’t see any circumstances in which taxes should be increased at anything other than a standard inflationary rate.
6. During the most recent legislative session the General Assembly passed legislation that proposed some modest mandates on restaurants with regards to smoking within the establishments. When the Governor got his hands on the bill he changed it completely to include a complete ban of smoking in all restaurants throughout the Commonwealth. The General Assembly mustered enough votes to override the Governor’s changes. This has obviously set up a battle in the coming years to have legislation to ban smoking. Do you support smoking bans for all restaurants, bars and other facilities?
Answer: I support smoking bans in enclosed public establishments in which both smoking and non-smoking customers are present. I think that tying a smoking ban to the service of food restricts the freedom of individuals to smoke outdoors, which is overly restrictive. I don’t agree with the argument that smoking bans will harm the business of restaurants and other enclosed establishments. As a Marine, I was briefly stationed in San Diego at a time when the city was instituting a smoking ban. Customers who were historically hesitant to frequent smoky establishments were visiting them more often and there was no significant reduction in the number of overall customers.
7. You list Immigration as an issue on your website. Immigration has been a hot topic throughout the state and country over the last several years. Many view illegal immigration as a national issue and one the federal government must work to resolve. What do you propose to limit the burden of illegal immigration on voters in the Commonwealth?
Answer: America should continue to be a land of opportunity. However, those who wish to enter must follow the rules. In my opinion, there is no reason to debate whether or not the government should allow or support an activity that is, by definition, illegal. My solution to the illegal immigration problem is simply to enforce the immigration laws that are on the books and to review and ensure that those laws are effective.
8. Governor Kaine does not favor the death penalty. He vetoed bills that would have imposed the death penalty on murderers of trial witnesses and judges. Many members of law enforcement saw these bills as opportunities to help fight increasing gang violence as well as other crimes. The General Assembly has since voted to override the Governor’s vetoes. Do you agree with the General Assembly or the Governor on the issue of the death penalty? Would you have any proposals to change any aspects of the death penalty and how it is imposed and carried out in the Commonwealth of Virginia?
Answer: I fully support the death penalty.
9. Finally, thank you for your time. Please share with the readers of the Virginia Virtucon any additional thoughts you may consider important issues for the voters of the 28th district that we have not covered.
Answer: There is one issue that I am including in my platform that is personally very important to me. I fought in Iraq alongside another officer named Tim Maxwell. Tim was an infantry officer, a father, and one of the top-rated tri-athletes in the Corps. During an insurgent mortar attack, Tim received a traumatic brain injury that left him permanently physically altered. Tim went through an incredible ordeal of physical recovery and even worked on behalf of wounded Marines to start a program that allows them to recover together as part of a unit of “wounded warriors” instead of being immediately discharged and left to their own recovery. I believe that Virginia needs to do more to provide for resident veterans who have been disabled during the conduct of operations in support of our nation. If elected, I will pass legislation that affords these heroes increased educational and professional opportunities through partnerships with Virginia’s universities and business communities. Tim’s efforts to help other wounded Marines can be seen at www.sempermax.com.
This interview and posting are not an endorsement. While Virginia Virtucon will certainly make an eventual endorsement in the race for Republican Nomination for the 28th Senate District, we are still learning about the candidates for the race.

Now THAT is an outstanding individual.
It’s high time that the 28th got its moral compass straight, and its checkbook balance in order too. Myers will have my family’s vote, and my neighbors as well!
I don’t know Meyers.
Nor does anyone else involved in Stafford politics.
Nor does anyone in the Northern Neck.
Nor does my pastor.
Nor do any of my conservative friends.
…but they do know Van Hoy. He certainly won’t equivocate on life, taxes, or the smoking ban.
Anon,
Hmm…that’s funny. Because I’m looking at Myers’ webpage now and it appears he is endorsed by nearly every elected Republican in Stafford. Is VanHoy endorsed by anyone in Stafford, or does he have to go outside of his hometown to get endorsements?
Anon,
Positively everyone in Stafford politics who participates on any level knows Jon Myers. He ran the SCRC website for years for crying out loud! We certainly don’t know you, however. Nor your pastor, nor your conservative friends, but I encourage you to get to know the Marine who knows how to lead. Anyone who has ever watched VanHoy on TV knows who the equivivator is. He’s not a bad guy, but frankly, he’s no senator either.
I don’t know what you find impressive about this interview. Sounds like a politician trying hard not to get nailed down on a specific issue. He didn’t say anything that the current senator or a Democrat running for office wouldn’t say. Don’t get me wrong, I am not supporting VanHoy or the other guy either, just trying to decide who would be best and this interview really doesn’t help me much.
[...] Riley has posted an interview with 28th Senate District candidate John Myers who at least can give a decent email interview, [...]
Also sounds like a politician who runs up the comments section to boost a floundering campaign!!! What a noob.
Typical when you can’t articulate a credible critique that the very brave “anonymous” stoops to ad hominems.
I’m impressed with his willingness at least to state his positions on the issues. A true politician dances around taking a stand.
Isn’t it amazing that the critics are anonymous on this page? They aren’t even sharp enough to come up with a name…just anonymous.
I LIKED this interview. I LIKED the tone. It was very high road, very smart and answered the questions asked.
Jon Myers is a smart, class act. He won’t take the dumpster dive of anonymous slamming. He is just going to stand on the issues.
Go Jon!
Black Velvet Bruce Li takes a different look at Myers. Seems some wonder how Myers will be while being endorsed by the guy who was endorsed by Chichester. Why did he remove “practical conservative” from his website?
I don’t claim to be from the area but I do firmly believe that all real conservatives have a stake in this race.
This statement on his website really concerns me: “Conservative Values First
Jon possesses conservative social and fiscal values. At the same time, he is tolerant of other viewpoints and able to work with leaders from both sides ”
This sounds like a squishy republican to me. At least with Van Hoy we know he has a past record of defending conservative values. Maybe Myers is not bad at all I just don’t know enough but with John Van Hoy we know were he stands and he will not compromise his core values in the senate.
This race could prove to be very interesting.
Well, we knew where VanHoy stood on the transporation bond issue here in Stafford. He stood right alongside the Democrats, who he joined with in opposing it, in spite of the fact that all the other Republicans in the county supported it. VanHoy is the ONLY candidate with an established record of siding with Democrats. Anyone who actually knows all three candidates, as I do, knows how laughable it is that VanHoy’s (very few) supporters are on these blogs trying to create the illusion that Myers, one of the most dedicated conservatives I have ever met and a bonafide war hero, is some sort of closet liberal. I can personally attest to at least a few people that were supporting VanHoy that changed their position once they met Myers.
Myers doesn’t seem to have a very ralisitc view of the process or he is simply a liar:
“The people who get results are the ones who are able to persuade others to their point of view without alienating them while at the same time never compromising conservative values. People want leaders who are able to persuade rather than those who refuse to participate in the process because they don’t get their way.”
Anyone with half a brain knows that you cannot, even with Myers’ no doubt impressive rhetorical skills, convince most politicans of anything except with threats or promises. This man either doesn’t know that, or he is the compormise candidate and simply lying to voters.
It also sounds to me like he’s in bed with the mod squad, especially on the smoking ban (which clearly he supports; choosing comfort over freedom–a typically liberal position).
I haven’t seen enough to make my choice yet, but Myers does not impress me so far.
Eric GOP–ALL of the other Republicans supported the Bond issue??!! WOW! I would have never expected an entire county committee to be so liberal as to support increased dept for their children and higher taxes down the road. Sounds like VanHoy is a man who sticks by his conserative guns even when the wind is blowing the other way–Not a Party hack I guess.
As for this Myers character, I don’t know much about him–what’s his deal?
Myers is a joke. No one serious think he is.
The previous 3 comments were all from the same IP address using different posting names, so make of that what you will.
Maybe Three different people clustered around one computer. Nah, couldn’t be. Actually I’m John T. from the post above (writing in from my home computer) and Robert is with me–he apologizes for not going back to his own at work yesterday. Kelly (anonymous) isn’t here but I’m sure she apologizes too. just to be clear we were three using 1 comp. sorry for the confusion.
Seems like time or politics does distort history. The Stafford Bond vote BOTH the $160 MILLION Road Bondand the $70 MILLION park bond were split base mainly on time served on the board of supervisors or active in politics. The older and experienced crew dems & repubs , elected and volunteers lobbied against the BOTH bonds and the newer board members both Dems & Repubs lobbied for the bonds.
Ok for this nomination lets just compare the Republicand see if ALL the Republicans were for the Bonds.
FOR:
Mark Dedenheffer…BOS
Paul Milde……………BOS
Robert Belman……Stafford School Board
Steven Apecilla,,,,,,Former Stafford GOP Chair
AGAINST:
Alvin Bandy……Former BOS
Ferris Belman…Former BOS
Mark Osborn…Former BOS
Gary Snellings….Former BOS
John Van Hoy….Former Stafford GOP chair
Several things seem apparent to me:
1) Not ALL Republicans were for the Bonds…BOTH bonds
2) The republicans seem to be splt, which I suspect is the moderate vs the conservative split showing up again, as it was well assumed if passed a tax increase would need to follow.
3) Jon Myers took no stand or was not known as a leader in this bond “discussion”.
A bit of editorial: So when do you show leadership in your community only after you decide to run for office?
Wow, I’m not even from that area, but considering all the energy that this Van Hoy person (or his supporters or whoever) is dedicating to attacking Myers, who from what I see on his page appears to be quite an impressive fellow, me thinks that maybe somebody feels threatened! Can somebody post a link to Van Hoy’s page? Thanks.
We’re not taking a position yet in this race here at Virtucon and we encouraged a Draft Van Hoy effort when no one had stepped forward to challenge Chichester. That said, I haven’t seen a web page for Van Hoy yet. In fact, if you Google him, you get directed to the Virtucon page drafting him.
I am not a resident of the District 28, but a supporter of Jon Myers. I have known him for over 2 years and will attest to his past performance history. Jon worked in a business unit that I led and my comments are based on direct observations of his performance. His leadership and fiscal management skills are superb.
Note that our government is lacking in both of these critical capabilities.
I recall one comment that criticized Jon’s view on the smoking ban. John T stated, “It also sounds to me like he’s in bed with the mod squad, especially on the smoking ban (which clearly he supports; choosing comfort over freedom–a typically liberal position).”
Comments like this should not be the basis on deciding who should be elected to lead.
Regardless of the side of the isle one sits one, the political leader has to serve “all constituents” regardless of political party affiliation. I think Jon’s views are aligned with serving his supporters and critics.
Jon has proven himself as a leader of Marines, and a leader in business…he is the optimal choice to lead the 28th Senate District.
We should be confident that the voters of the 28th Senate District will do the right thing on Election Day…elect Jon Myers!
My last response contains a typo.
I said, “Regardless of the side of the isle one sits one” and intended to say, “Regardless of the side of the isle one sits on”.
I am a voter of the 28th and I enjoy watching politics including C-span but I do not know any of the candidates. And I have not decided self on my vote as I take it seriously.
It was my intention to correct some of the info I know to be untrue about the bonds being a party line debate.
Did not mean to offend by the editorial just havin a little fun is all but it seems this race is a little to tense for that.
But on the serious side which side does Jon come down on for the bonds which were proposed in Stafford?
Was he in favor of them passing or was he opposed to them. as it was an yes/no vote?
Does anyone else notice that Albert Pollard is proud enough of his faith to mention it: http://fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2007/032007/03202007/268893.
As of today, this Myers guy doesn’t even mention God or Church anywhere on his website. I’m a bit of an old fashioned Democrat, and I must say, it impresses me when a candidate is up front with the public about his faith, especially in my party. I find it odd that this Republican has failed to do so thus far.
Maybe Myers doesn’t believe in using his faith for political gain.
Wow! Now even Pollard supporters are on here (Ghost of A.L. Philpott) going after Myers, and the Republican nomination isn’t even over yet! Seems to me that the Dems would like somebody else to be the Republican nominee.
“Can somebody post a link to Van Hoy’s page?”…
“I haven’t seen a web page for Van Hoy yet. In fact, if you Google him, you get directed to the Virtucon page drafting him.”
However, on the company he is listed as vice president of: http://www.eva.state.va.us/dps/Buyers/docs/debarred.pdf

I think the reason that the Pollard supporters are attacking Jon is that they know he is the only one running who can beat Pollard. The other two candidates–particularly Van Hoy, are a Democrats dream opposition. I wont go into personal attacks, just encourage everyone to thoroughly check out his past and see if this is someone that a true conservative can support.
Amen to Semper Fi. Check out the facts first. Call or email all three and see who calls you back fastest and has the best enthusiasm. That’s the guy who has the fortitude to sustain himself in a state senate race. It’s hard and relentless. The Dems have a lot at stake here and the whole Mid-Atlantic is watching these senate races to see if Virginia is turning blue or not. I suspect they will come out in droves to support the party’s weakest link and the guy who doesn’t even have a website online yet in this day and age. For more info: http://www.jonmyers.org – http://www.graziano4senate.com – http://www.vanhoy4senate.com
I just attended a debate in the Northern Neck last night with all the candidates. I was quite unimpressed with the newcomer into the race Stewart (Chichester’s personal pick) as he all but said he would raise taxes, and clearly stated that he was not pro-life. I certainly hope that the rest of the counties of the Northern Neck area of the 28th District take special notice of this RHINO of Chichester’s!! Also- He was proud to say that BILL HOWELL endorses him too- this disturbs me since Howell has pretty much turned his back on everything that has been a conservative vote since he got in office. There are three remaining conservatives in the race… the first three that entered -mentioned above. In all honesty, Jon Myers was the candidate who answered the questions with the most conviction in his voice that he was ready to be the next Senator. I don’t think the other two wanted to be there or took our votes seriously enough since they were ABSOLUTELY Stafford County-types. Jon Myers may live there too, but he didn’t act like it (and that’s a GOOD thing!!!)
Can someone tell me how Richard Stuart’s positions differ from Albert Pollard’s? Somehow, I don’t think they do…
Stewart and Pollard are the same person. It’s like how you never see Michael and Janet Jackson in the same place at the same time… hmm.
Is anyone going to go to the Stafford debate on May 15th?
I’m wondering if our duly endorsed legal genius will attempt to talk his way out of his positions and remove his non-conservative non-republican foot from his mouth, or embrace them and hope he finds a moderate crowd that night.
I think they will eat him alive. Graziano and Vanhoy didn’t even show up in Westmoreland County’s GOP debate. Stewart should do the same in their turf. If he goes, he’ll only shoot himself in the foot.
I will be at the Stafford Forum–I think (always depends).
Jim G. What are “Stafford County types”?
Everyone will say: “Well he’s your brother, what else would you say”. The truth of the matter is that I am his brother, older brother, and proud of it. Jon is, and always has been, a straight shooter. He is one of the most ethical and hardworking individuals I’ve ever known. He has always been a patriot in doing what is right for his god, his country, and his family. And, as I can personally vouch for, he is definitely a doer and always has been.
Jon and I had the entire world for our canvas growing up. Having spent many of our younger years growing up overseas (Philippines, Greece, Mexico, Italy) he is quite proficient in multicultural perspectives and, even though I was the better ball player, he could still swing a bat that you could count on. Living close to the diplomatic missions overseas afforded us the opportunity to be quite intimate with the political and governmental machine on both foreign and domestic soil. Unlike the majority of Americans, that have always resided here on US soil, he has the ability to see both the internal and external forces that affect how people view our great nation and ultimately shape who we are as a society.
What I personally believe about Jon, and that I hope the rest of this district understands, is that he represents the New Generation — the younger, non-baby boomer generation. His view points and ethical concerns are important as to the type of leadership that will run this nation in the very near future. His strong work ethic, academic and social credentials will highlight his impeccable background. We need this type of talent to move this nation forward in the right direction. We can no longer afford to let the “same old politics” of DC develop the roadmap for our nation. In short, he is definitely someone you can trust and count on. If Jon says he will work on it, I can guarantee he will fight for it until there is no fight left.
For those that make the personal and unprofessional comments: you should feel lucky that you have Jon running for office, because it is Jon who put his own life on the line so that you can express your constitutional right and criticisms. It is these personal attacks that are the essence of the “same old politics” governing our nation. I have only one personal bit of advice; lead, follow or get out of the way. It’s time for the younger generation to take hold.
Ok, I thought maybe the other candidates were going to wait until the last 10 days to ramp it up. I have seen nothing from VanHoy, Graziano and Stuart except token signs. Is Myers the only one running? He has signs, mailers, letters to the editor, victory tours, precinct walks, etc. This guy knows how to run a campaign. I’m impressed and I just don’t understand the lack of campaigning from the other guys. Do they really think they can win with mailers?
The other 3 are either:
1. Lazy campaigners
2. Over confident
3. Clueless
4. Void of a plan of action
5. Indifferent about actually getting hired for the job
6. Throwing in the towel, but attempting to save face to their backers by not ‘quitting’ -’again’ for one of them.
7. Believe they have done and spent enough time and money already and have run their entire campaign already and just sitting back to see what happens.
If Jon Myers does not win this canvass by a sizeable margin due to just out-campaigning the rest I will be surprised.
If he does not win at all, I will be highly suspect of who is controlling the ballot boxes and counting the votes. Voters in each County should be equally as alerted as to the possibility of fraud by non-state-run elections of this magnitude. I can not find out anywhere how this is being run and who is running it or how the votes will be protected as they are gathered and counted.
Amen to the lack of transparency on the part of the 1st district. Yeah, we’re just supposed to “trust” that everything is on the up and up. Well, here is a warning…it may not be a board of elections run process but it’s still a felony to tamper with votes. All eyes and ears need to be alert and ready. When there is a lack of info flow, I’m suspicious.
Can someone direct me to a site that gives an overview of the Stafford Co. debate on the 16th? Thanks.
