An elected’s thoughts on the RPV Chairman’s Race

I had a chance to speak with one of Virginia’s elected Republican officials the other day abouth the race for RPV Chairman.  He has some interesting thoughts on both John Hager and Charlie Judd.  (Since this was a casual conversation and I did not ask permission to quote him, I will keep this individual’s identity confidential.)

This person genuinely likes both of these men.  That said, he did express some concerns.  While he did not have a problem with John Hager having served in Mark Warner’s administration per se, he did think that it could present problems where Hager’s credibility would be questioned by Democrats and the media when he has to criticize Democrats in the role of RPV Chairman.  With regard to Judd serving as both Chairman and Exec. Dir. of RPV, he said that while it is legitimate to debate whether we should pay our state party chairman as some states do, that debate should be separate from this set of circumstances and not tied to a particular candidate for RPV Chairman.

I told this official that I was just glad that I no longer served on the RPV State Central Cmte. and he seemed to be equally happy to be off it and not have to face this decision either.

So, is either John Hager or Charlie Judd the right man for the job?  Or should we look elsewhere?  What about U.S. Rep. Tom Davis who ably served as National Republican Congressional Cmte. chairman for 4 years?  Or what about U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes who previously served as RPV Chairman while he was in the state senate?  I could easily see either of those men continuing on in the mould of Ed Gillespie.

  2. I have real questions about John Hager’s loyalty as a Republican. He was not man enough to support Mark Early. The man is a poor loser or a “not so good Republican”. He would probably not be to hard on the Democrats. No wonder our party is in the condition it is at this time.

    I enjoyed your information.

    Thanks,

Carl D. Bieber (Former 2nd Dist. Chm.)

  3. I’ve got a great candidate for us: Bill Paxon.

    Bill Paxon

I was trying to think of someone who could bring the same stature and ability to the RPV that Gillespie did and who lives in VA. And, I just kept coming back to Bill Paxon.

Former Congressman and Chairman of the NRCC in 1994 and 1996 when we won control of the House and kept it! When he took over the NRCC, he inherited a committee with $4.5 million in debt, a bloated staff, and little credibility. He turned it around, cutting staff by 75%, instituting private sector management tools, raising more than $150 million, recruiting a record number of challengers, helping craft the Contract with America, and working with state and local GOPs all across the nation to rebuild the NRCC’s credibility.

Tell me that doesn’t sound like the perfect guy to take over the RPV with Gillespie leaving?

He lives in Alexandria and though he’s a lobbyist with Akin Gump, he’s been called to GOP service by the President many a time. He was an early key advisor to President Bush and was the Chairman of his Transition Advisory Team. He was also Chairman of the Majority Fund at the RNC and Co-Chairman of the RNC Finance Committee. And, he and his wife (former Congresswoman Susan Molinari) have opened their home to local GOP candidates.

Paxon is a skilled politician. He is known to be a political wonk. I think we need a groundswell here. He doesn’t carry with him any of the misgivings that people seem to be expressing about Judd or Hager. He’s the perfect face for the new RPV. Don’t you think?

  4. That’s a very interesting proposal, Michelle. I hadn’t thought of that. Do you think that he’d be up for it? What would the chances be of getting enough SCC members onboard with this idea over the next 4 weeks to make it happen?
