Complaint Filed Against DPV and Chris Brown

This just in:

The Virginia Club for Growth (VCG) PAC announced today that it has filed a complaint with four state officials having overlapping jurisdiction over the enforcement of the Virginia Campaign Finance Disclosure Act, against the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPV) and 52nd Delegate District Democrat Candidate Chris Brown.

The complaint stems from two fictitious and misleading mailings paid for by the DPV and authorized by Candidate Brown. The flyers were mailed to a large number of voters in the 52nd Delegate District; they claim that incumbent Del. Jeff Frederick (R-Prince William) has a plan to raise the sales tax by 34%. The flyers infer that Del. Frederick is a member of the VCG PAC and imply that this PAC advocates such a tax increase. The flyers also provide a footnote to a page on the VCG PAC website that has been removed; ironically, this page had been used in 2005 to post a Press Release endorsing Del. Frederick and highlighting his stellar anti-tax record.

“To suggest that the Virginia Club for Growth supports a plan calling for tax increases is akin to proclaiming that the Pope is not a Catholic” said VCG President, Phil Rodokanakis. “Every person who is active in political or grassroots circles knows that the VCG PAC only promotes and endorses candidates that have taken a pledge in support of lower taxes and smaller government.”

The complaint urges four state officials to undertake an investigation of the DPV given that this is the second attempt by this organization to malign and misrepresent the policies promoted by the VCG. In 2005 the campaign of then Candidate for Governor Tim Kaine, authorized a political flyer that was written in a misleading fashion and gave the impression that it had been mailed by VCG PAC. The State Board of Elections (SBE) fined Gov. Kaine’s campaign $100 for failing to abide by the Print Media Disclaimer Requirements for Candidates.

“Jeff Frederick has a stellar anti-tax record” said Rodokanakis. “As a Freshman Delegate, Frederick was a leader in the battle against the $1.6 billion tax increase in 2004. He outdid himself in 2007 by voting against the entire Republican leadership whose single-minded pursuit in enacting HB3202 brought us the $3,000 traffic ticket and new taxes by unelected and unaccounted bureaucrats.”

Rodokanakis added: “Under no conceivable circumstances would the VCG PAC or Delegate Frederick advocate a tax increase. The Democrats know better; unfortunately, they will stop at nothing in misleading and deceiving the voters.”

The irony in all of this is that while Chris Brown was mayor of Dumfries, he fought for several tax increases. Under Brown’s leadership, the sales tax was increased by over 36 percent, while the utilities tax was increased 23 percent. To even suggest that Del. Frederick is inclined to raise taxes goes way beyond the pot calling the kettle black. Jeff Frederick has an impeccable anti-tax record-he has voted for ZERO tax increases over his four years in the House of Delegates and will continue fighting for hard working Virginia families in reducing their tax burden and for limiting the size of government.

The Democrats must be desperate to blatantly lie to the voters. Jeff Frederick is a good friend and I will personally vouch for his solid conservative credentials. Voters should not be fooled by the Democrat shell games. The Democratic Party pulled a card out of Mark Warner’s playbook by lying-again-about taxes. We expect a written apology to the entire district and a full retraction by Mr. Brown and the DPV.” added Rodokanakis.

  1. As an eight year resident of Prince William county in Virginia I have witnessed the huge influx of Hispanic residents, estimated to have increased from 9.7% of the population in 2000 to 18% in 2005 – it has to be higher this year (WTOP News, July 2007).

This influx of Latino people, mainly from Central American countries, has created a sort of hysteria amongst Prince William’s largely conservative voting base. The ‘migrant workers’ gathered at 7-11 convenience stores (waiting for work),
