In a blogosphere first, Virginia Virtucon (in cooperation with J’s Notes) will be liveblogging tonight from the headquarters of the Republican Party of Virginia starting at 7:00pm as the polls close and results start rolling in. Results will also include exclusive thoughts and comments from RPV as the night goes on.
RPV will also be answering any questions so feel free to use the comments here to ask away and be sure to check out Virginia Virtucon throughout the day.
12:35pm Update: Statement from RPV Communication Director Shaun Kenney:
140 seats open for reelection and the voters chose to send back a Republican majority in the House and nearly chose to send back a Republican majority in the Senate. The message is simple, Democrats are being asked to bi-partisanly build on the Republican successes of the last eight years. Either they’ll be constructive and work with the House majority or they’ll be otherwise and rollback the progress we’ve made.
12:30pm Update: There is a real possibility of a recount in the Cuccinelli race. Loudoun County has yet to post any results so the Phillips (R) race in SD33 is undecided and while she has an outside chance of pulling off an upset, those are WAY outside and Herring will probably hold. I am going to sign off for the night. There will be plenty of time to evaluate and discuss these results tomorrow. Thanks for joining us.
12:16pm Update: Loudoun Co. has yet to report any precincts. UPDATE: Thanks to Ric James in the comments for sharing the WaPo’s counts of Loudoun Co.
12:10pm Update: Fairfax is doing absentee counting tonight. Cuccinelli folks are on the way.
12:03am Update: Nichols (D) beats Gill in HD51. Caputo (D) wins HD67. Republicans will hold House but by a slim margin.
Speaker Bill Howell’s statement:
Statement of House Speaker William J. Howell
– Regarding Results of the 2007 General Election –RICHMOND, VA – Virginia House of Delegates Speaker William J. Howell (R-Stafford) tonight issued the following statement regarding the results of the 2007 General Election:
“For the fifth General Election in a row, Virginians have selected the House Republican Caucus to lead the House of Delegates. Our caucus continues to be honored by the confidence placed in our members by the people of Virginia, and we will continue to work diligently, thoughtfully and constructively on their behalf.
“The true test of a strong majority is whether it can weather bad times as well as good. Tonight, our strong Republican majority in the House of Delegates endured despite a challenging political environment.
“Our extensive record of accomplishment, as well as our affirmative reform agenda, was what made the difference for House Republicans in this year’s election. While our Democrat counterparts relied primarily on expressing their dissatisfaction with our achievements, we highlighted our extensive record on education, health care, taxes, land use, the environment and more. And, while our Democrat counterparts failed to present or advance their own vision for Virginia’s future, we championed a positive agenda on school construction, health care, transportation, mental health, property tax relief, illegal immigration and state spending. If this election is any indicator, when given a choice between a predominantly negative attacks and a specific, detailed positive agenda, Virginians choose the latter. For those who paid attention during civics class, this is heartening news, providing further evidence that good policy does indeed make for good politics.
“Now, it is our job to act upon the positive reform agenda we advanced during this election. As we’ve already made clear what we intend to do in the 2008 General Assembly session, we’ll be busy crafting and submitting legislation over the coming weeks to fulfill our commitment to the people of Virginia. Of course, we also face the important task of constructing a fiscally sound biennial budget and protecting the state’s Rainy Day Fund from being raided in a time of growing revenues.
“We have a number of new members to welcome to our caucus, and we all look forward to working closely with Delegates Manoli Loupassi, Jimmie Massie, Don Merricks, Brenda Pogge, and Charles Poindexter. There also are new faces on the other side of the aisle, and, on behalf of the House Republican Caucus and entire chamber, I welcome Delegates Bouchard, Mathieson, Morrisey, Nichols, and Vanderhye to the oldest continuously elected law-making body in the world.
“Virginia has made much progress during the eight years Republicans have been leading the House of Delegates. As indicated by our track record, we are prepared for the challenges ahead and are optimistic about successfully advancing our new ideas, innovative reforms and common-sense solutions for Virginia’s continued progress and prosperity.”

How many Thermopylae references has Matt Wells made when discussing holding the state senate?
300?
If Dems want to hold open the 45th, which is in the very heart of Old Town Alexandria, you KNOW they’ve got problems all about!!! Mark Allen raised a ton of cash and had signs all over the place in people’s homes and businesses (unlike the Englin signs that resided in median strips.)
Democrats Work?
Jason, can you put D and R next to the names? For those not all that familiar w/ the entire state
oh puleeze. now it will be Metro’s fault if this guy doesn’t win, or doesn’t win by the margin he hopes for?
hello! sometimes stuff happens! and going to court is not always a remedy.
all of those hoped for voters could have voted before going to work.
We like Claps!!!
Gardner, will try.
I’m trying to make you do more work. I’m sitting in a hotel room, so not that much going on. I could have asked for Red and Blue names.
Is the Marshall referenced at 7:57PM update at -1900 with 21 of 30 reporting…is this Bob Marshall in the 13th?
I don’t think so. SBE isn’t showing any returns for Bob Marshall yet. I think this may be Danny Marshall.
If Fitz is only down by 200 with Manassas already reporting, PWC should put him over the top. No reports out of PWC on anything yet.
Marshall in HD14. Sorry.
JK-Thanks…I just didn’t want the RK folks to get too happy too fast…
Miller is running ahead of 2006 in both manassas and The park…when does that race get called?
SBE has Colgan ahead of Fitz by 1065 with all of manassas and the park in…how does that square up with the projections in this race?
What’s the mood at RPV?
Gardner,
Have you ever sat shiva? That’s the mood at RPV.
How can we get through to these Northern Virginians who continue to vote so illogically? Can we give Fairfax to Maryland?
3 strong PWC precincts left to report for O’Brien.
Greenbrair West precinct (which you don’t have ) has wins for Cuccinelli, Cadin, Herrity, J. Frey, and Liz Bradsher.
For some reason, the people running the counts for Loudoun have decided they don’t need to keep the SBE page updated unlike every other county in the Commonwealth. I’m told they are, however, keeping their counting spreadsheets up on the bog screens in the BoS room at the County admin building. A WaPo reporter has been doing his job, at least, and reporting what he sees. Check here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/metro/elections/2007/results/general_loudoun.html
