Continuing Coverage of 1st CD – Wittman

Rob Wittman – candidate for Republican nomination for the 1st Congressional District answers Virginia Virtucon’s questionairre

1. If elected what will be your top priorities over the next several months?
Assure that our soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan receive the best care possible by improving the quality, availability and scope of veteran’s benefits and services.

Secure our borders both North and South to address both illegal immigration and national security issues.

Assure that our military has the resources and support it needs to continues as the greatest fighting force in the world.

2. What are your views on the following issues:
The War in Iraq?
– No matter how you feel about the U.S. entering the war in Iraq we are now there and we need to finish the mission assure that Iraq is secure before we start to draw down troops in the region. We must also press the Iraqi government o be more aggressive in taking over security of their country. As areas of the country are secured by U.S forces we assure the Iraqi forces come in to maintain security and that they demonstrate success before our forces withdraw from the region.

Taxes? I oppose new taxes and support keeping the Republican tax cuts in addition to reducing federal spending and reducing the federal deficit.

Environmental Protection? Healthy natural resources in the 1st district are critical to our economy. The Chesapeake Bay is in trouble and both the federal and state government must make the commitment to clean it up. There must be performance based efforts to assure that dollars currently spent on clean up are producing results. Both our commercial and sport fishing industries  are suffering from poor water quality in the Bay. By cleaning up the Bay we can increase the oysters, crabs and fish available to all both commercial and sport fisherman.

3. From the federal level how would you held address our traffic crisis in Virginia?
Fight to have more of the federal highway tax dollars collected in Virginia come back to the state for highway improvements.

Assure that federal projects and expansions in Virginia come with money to pay for required highway improvements.

4. If you could change only one decision that the federal government has made in the past four years, what would it be and why?
I would change the lack of action taken by Congress to address the issue of illegal immigration by acting to secure our borders and act to address the issue of over 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S..

5. What is the one thing that sets you apart from everyone else running for this seat?
I have over 22 years of experience in elected office – 10 years on the Montross Town Council – 4 as Mayor , 10 years on the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors – 2 as Chairman. and have been in the Virginia House of Delegates since 2005. I have a strong record of getting things done as a member of a legislative body both at the local and state level. I have been effective in persuading my cohorts in these legislative bodies  to support the legislation I have patroned. I have the experience, the record of effectiveness, the passion and the work ethic to flourish as the next Congressman from America’s First district.

6. If elected will you stand for re-election next year? Yes!
