Kill It. Now.

The abomination that is Metro to Dulles is apparently on its death bed.

We should kill it.  Now.

I’m not saying that Metro to Tysons — or maybe even as far as Wiehle Ave. — is a bad idea, but extending it all the way out to Dulles Airport and beyond cannot be justified by any sort of cost-benefit analysis.  At least not with $5 billion (and growing) worth of taxpayers’ dollars at stake.

Of course, had Gov. Timmy! done the smart thing and leased the Dulles Toll Road to a public-private partnership in exchange for a nice tidy sum instead of giving it away for free to the airports authority, perhaps the funds for this boondoggle would be available.

That not being the case, this project should be killed now and bus rapid transit to the airport that can be instituted now rather than in 2016 (and cuts in half the travel time of the Metro plan) should be put in place.

And to those who think that this is just what they need to get that tunnel under Tysons instead of elevated platforms, such as this person:

“This is an opportunity for us to make the best of this and see if we can’t get the project corrected,” said Scott Monett of TysonsTunnel.org. “We can still move Dulles rail forward — with a tunnel.”

I pose the following question — What alternate reality do they live in?  A Tysons tunnel will only add more cost to this already bloated project. The only way I ever see a Tysons tunnel happening is if the Metro extension only goes as far as Tysons or Wiehle.

Just kill this project now before any more money is wasted on its planning or pre-construction work.

  1. A Metro extension to counter BRAC between Ft. Belvoir and Quantico is a much more important priority (and BRAC funds should be tapped to fund it). Dulles is not the nightmare the already congested 95 Corridor is. Death to Dulles, life to a Belvoir / Quantico route.

  2. Don’t diss the Tysons Tunnel folks. They are fighting a battle against Marky Mark/Timmy that exposes how much they screwed up the initial deal with Bechtel et al. IF MARK WARNER HADN’T BOTCHED THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE WITH A NO BID CONTRACT TO HIS PALS BECHTEL, WE WOULDN”T BE IN THIS PROBLEM

  3. Would you support an express bus system running on specifically-constructed lanes from Dulles connecting to a metro station?

  4. I think that makes much more sense. In fact, I link to a previous post about the Bus Rapid Transit system that has been proposed. It is cheaper, faster and can be implemented in months instead of years.
