According to Greg L. at BVBL, PWC Police Chief “Good Time Charlie” Deane has met with about a dozen foreign officials, way beyond the single incident we reported on the other day.
Now we hear this:
[T]he U.S. State Department has contacted county officials today in order to find out what’s been going on.
. . .
When we have a local public official with no diplomatic training or resources engaging in undisclosed private discussions with senior-level agents of a foreign government, especially when those agents represent governments that have clearly diverging interests with our local laws and policies, it’s not only the right thing to do to demand answers, but it’s the only responsible thing to do.
As I stated last week, the BOCS has an obligation to know whether the county’s police chief may have violated federal law. While supporting our police is laudable, it must not be done so blindly. I have made it no secret that I am not a fan of Chief Deane and believe that he overreaches and underperforms. That said, I would still support any efforts that he undertakes to fulfill his mission of public safety and make sure that our county’s police officers have everything that they need to be safe and successful in the execution of their duties. This, however, is a serious matter with regard to Deane’s judgment and understanding of what he is engaged in. Our supervisors need to find out for certain when they meet tomorrow whether Deane has violated federal law and, if so, take appropriate measures.
