This past weekend, the Young Republican Federation of Virginia held their annual Convention at the Richmond Omni.
The YRFV has made incredible strides over the past year, with the Richmond club being reviatlized by Cristen Vehorn and a new club in Roanoke formed under the direction of Chris Obenshain.
After a very nice welcoming reception at Blackfinn Restaurant on Friday night sponsored by former Governor Jim Gilmore, Saturday’s events were held at the Omni.
Highlights included a panel by Delegates Chris Saxman, Ben Cline, and Bill Janis, and Senator Ryan McDougle. The four of them did a very effective job presenting conservative principles in a way that suburban voters can relate to, particularly with regards to such issues as reining in government spending in order to control taxes (Delegate Saxman in particular made a point of talking about how many printers our state employees use, and how much money could be saved by trimming that to a more reasonable number).
The lunch on Saturday featured speeched by Senate candidates Jim Gilmore and Bob Marshall. Without going into my personal commentary, I will say that, following the speeches, it was very apparent that a solid, solid majority of the YR’s in attendance are supporting Jim Gilmore for the nomination.
The highlight of the afternoon was speeched by RPV Chairman candidates John Hager and Jeff Frederick. Both made strong pitches for their candidacy, and the folks in attendance appeared to be about evenly split between the two (I plan to address my personal feelings on that race at some point in the future).
Other highlights included speeches by our next Governor, Bob McDonnell, and by Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling.
With about 60-75 folks in attendance, this was the largest YRFV Convention in the past several years. Congratulations to Chair Lori-Anne Smith and convention organizer Cristen Vehorn (Greater Richmond YR Chair) for their outstanding job putting together such an enjoyable weekend. Special thanks as well to Prince William Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart for sponsoring a very nice brunch this morning at Capitol Ale House.

It was nice meeting you at the YRFV Convention on Saturday. The YRFV Convention was great, and it was energizing hearing from the speakers.
Thanks for the plug. It certainly was a great convention and I hope we see twice as many people there next year! I look forward to working with all the great YRs across our Commonwealth to make sure that VA goes for the GOP in ‘08 and gives us great momentum going into ‘09
