John Brownlee Resigning as US Attorney

The Roanoke Times web site is reporting that US Attorney John Brownlee has scheduled at 2:30 PM press conference to announce his resignation.

It would not be difficult to interpret this as the first step in his anticipated 2009 campaign for Attorney General. If he chooses to run, the biggest strength he would bring to the race is his successful prosecutorial experience, coupled with what could turn out to be a solid geographic base in the 6th and 9th (and parts of the 5th) districts.

As I’ve said before, I believe anyone who wants to mount a serious challenge to Ken Cuccinelli for the AG nomination probably needs to be in the race no later than the State Convention next month.

  1. Word on the street, Brownlee is already making calls trying to line up staffers and consultants.

The Kilgore’s are backing him too.

  2. [...] the announcement of John Brownlee retiring from his US Attorney’s position and, potentially, getting ready to run for AG has caused some folks to believe that this will be another example of NoVA (Sen. Cuccinelli) v. [...]

  3. Baril, Obenshain, and Bell have said they’re not running. If what majorkong says it right, then neither of the Kilgores will be running.
The only other names I’ve heard mentioned as possible candidates are McDougle and Harris.
I agree that if anyone else wants to get into the race, they must do so in time for the Convention next month.

  4. Please question Mr Brownlee about the $634.5M from Purdue Pharma that was diverted and caused Attorney General Gonzales to resign over. I can tell you plenty about this. 423-361-0430
