Gas Tax: Let’s Have a Referendum

If Governor Kaine and Senate Democrats want to increase taxes on gasoline, I say we give them a statewide vote next fall.  Let’s put it to the people.

Now I don’t think it has a prayer of passing.  But I think if the Dems want to commit political suicide in Virginia this fall, let them do it.

It worked out ok for us last time.  Dems seem so confident that in the middle of rising gas prices and a challenging economy the public will support this.

Be my guest Gov.  Let’s see some success where your predecessor failed.

  1. Is it legally possible under the Code of Virginia to do a referendum on a gas tax increase?

  2. I think so. I think all that is required is for the GA to pass a law authorizing it.

  3. Referendums are absurd, and little irritates me more than when they are called for. Our Founding Fathers established a republic for the very reason of allowing elected officials to make informed decisions, as opposed to important decisions being made by the uninformed masses.

  4. I would say that as long as you don’t make it a habit ala California, there’s no harm in an occasional referendum.
