Can You Say Double Standard?

The University Mary of Washington, a publicly funded University thinks it’s just fine and dandy to sell Obama/Biden T-shirts with the UMW logo on them at the campus bookstore.  I wonder if the same would be the case if McCain/Palin were to visit UMW?

The shirt has UMW’s logo on the front and the back reads: “Obama was there, Biden was there, I was there, UMW ’08.”

“We came up with the ideas and ran it up the chain at the university,” said bookstore manager Kathy Underwood. “We wanted to make sure it was appropriate.” Rest of article

This is off the heels of the Fairfax County School Board denying the Fairfax McCain rally to be held at Fairfax High School.   The state appears to be filled with double standards.

Call the UMW President’s office at (540) 654-1301or email mcorbin@umw.edu and ask they stop selling the Obama shirts now!
They got the message!

Update: Did the UMW bookstore manager and  Unversity chain of command violate state law?

State employees may not campaign for themselves or for anyone else
during work hours, nor can they use state equipment or resources for
political
activities. Further, no employee is to be rewarded or discriminated
against in any way for participating or not participating in political
activities outside of
the workday and work place. Before beginning any political activity,

may be used for political purposes.
2. No employee may be forced to engage in any political activity as a
condition of employment.
3. No employee shall be rewarded or discriminated against in any way
for participating or not participating in any political activities.
4. While there is a prohibition against engaging in political
activities on state time or with state resources, there are no legal
limitations on
your political activities outside of the office. If you wish to
participate in a political activity during regular work hours, you
must use
personal leave.
5. Employees may work on campaigns, donate money, attend campaign
events (including fundraisers), place a sign in the yard, put a bumper
sticker on the car, and engage in many other political activities.
6. Employees may belong to and hold office in political committees and
organizations.
7. Employees may express their opinions as private citizens and are
encouraged to vote.
As a state employee, you are in a position of public trust. Therefore,
you may not accept gifts, gratuities, favors, or rewards for any
services you perform
in connection with state employment other than from the agency where
you work. Likewise, it is unlawful for employees to solicit, offer, or
accept
money or any thing of value in exchange for appointment or selection
to a position at a higher salary, or for special privilege with any
state agency.

    Attorney General agrees.

  7. If that’s the case, then the AG is right to stop the sales.
