Good, that kid deserved what he got. The dad of the kid is an idiot as well, trying to say he “just wanted to see how it was put together……” Some people can’t just say “sorry my kid messed with your stuff” because that guy probably told his kid to do that…..
I’m a Dem and I think it’s ridiculous that the parents didn’t reign this kid in. Free speech, folks.
I am so glad that your son was not seriously hurt when he attempted to violate that man’s first amendment right of free speech. I was shocked that someone who supports Obama would try to switch a yard sign, it would have been so much easier if you and our son would have gone to Texas or Ohio and just let him vote for his favorite candidate. I am sure the folks at Acorn could have helped you out with getting him registered.
Lucky the your sons lesson was on the first admendment and not the second.
Hahahahaha!!! That’s a good technique to protect your signs.
Good I am glad. Teach the kid a lesson. My question is why did the homeowner turn off the power? Turn it back on. My 2nd question is since when are 9yr olds into politics. I have been in that area. I also have a place outside Raleigh NC and I live in PA and have been around tons of 9yr olds. This is odd that the kid is so into politics to remove a sign from someones yard. I have a niece that is 10 and she is more concerned with what she is getting from the mall than politics. Kids are not learning about politics that early in school either. So who really put the kid up to changing the sign out? I think parents are using their kids for this type of nonsense.
It just amazes me that someone would electrify a sign. I’m surprised that this “Christian” Republican didn’t install a machine gun nest. He had a camera and caught the kid red-handed. He could have shown the video to the local police and filed charges without all the electrical hardware. Who’s he kidding. This guy wanted to make sure that there was punishment involved, so he provided it. There’s no excuse for stealing his signs. He has a right to his opinion just like anyone else. The kid should have been punished. However, the punishment should be left to the law, not the individual. His signs said “Electric Fence” NOT “Electrified Signs”.
Gino,
If you bothered to read the whole article you would know that I’m not a Republican. The electrification of the signs was intended to prevent them from being stolen again – a technique that worked. In fact, about 12 hours after I cut the power, they disappeared yet again.
It had nothing to do with “punishment”.
Now all of a sudden Gino starts attacking Christians and Republicans. Disentangle yer twisted panties and get your facts straight before you start spouting off.
I applaud you, Shawn Turschak.
“My 2nd question is since when are 9yr olds into politics.”
You have to understand Chapel Hill. I used to be a Democrat but there is no other way to put it– this is a flaming liberal town. People have bumper stickers on their cars saying “Voldemort’s a Republican” and they think that’s just hilarious. If you say you support McCain here, people will (I am not kidding) equate you with the devil.
It is therefore not surprising that this kid, I’m sure raised in a typical Chapel Hill household in which hate is bad except when it comes to Republicans, was quite happy to try to switch the signs.
If you put the sign back out again, Shawn, please hook it up to the fence again.
The boy’s parents should be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, if they had anything to do with this incident. Further, if they did not (as the mother claims) then where was the supervision? Mom states she knew the boy took some Obama signs from their home, but claims she didn’t know what he planned to do with them. When a 9 y.o. leaves home with political signs in hand – - oh, I don’t know – - perhaps you ASK him his plan?! Further, there were signs warning of the electrical charge. Once your kid gets shocked while effectively committing a crime, you teach him to walk away quietly, not draw attention to himself by knocking on doors, calling police and the media etc. One lesson that should be learned here – don’t screw around with someone else’s property. You never know what consequences may await you!

My political views are WAY different than Shawn Turschak’s, however, I completely agree that he has every right to defend his property and his freedom of speech (in this case, his yard sign). Mr. Noble had no business sending his child to swap out the McCain sign for an Obama one, and no right to even be on Mr. Turschak’s property. Closer to my home (Warren, Ohio), a man took out a shot gun and shot at kids who were trying to mess with his McCain sign! Now THAT’s Crazy! The tiny electrical shock Mr. Turschak rigged up was, in my opinion, not inappropriate or excessive.
Apparently some college prof was asked to resign from St. Olaf’s College for stealing McCain-Palin signs from a rural stretch of road in Minnesota. Then he had the gaul to brag about it, saying that it was a thrill and “an act of civil disobedience.” I think his fast track to unemployment was neither inappropriate nor excessive, especially given the fact that he bragged about it on the Huffington Post.
What is wrong with these people?
