Fact – Cuccinelli WAS Commissioned A Marine Officer

Shaun Kenney has helped to thoroughly debunk allegations that State Sen. Ken Cuccinelli was falsely claiming to have been a U.S. Marine.  Apparently, this bio online at Roll Call listing his military service is what caused all the hub bub.  From Cooch’s campaign:

Ken successfully completed OCS and was commissioned a Marine Corps Officer.  He was deactivated to complete law school, and the Marines never reactivated him, as they had over-recruited lawyers and they refused his request to switch to the infantry.  So, aside from OCS, Ken never served on active duty.

Now, Cuccinelli rarely talks about being a Marine because he modestly says he doesn’t consider that he actually “served.”  Surviving Officer Candidate School at Quantico is praiseworthy.  Whoever is behind peddling this drivel against Cooch should be ashamed of themselves.

  1. They’re trying to lay the “blame” for this at my feet and trying to sully Vincent as well. I have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of for asking a legitimate question based on conflicting biographical sketches. Kenney blew this up into more then it had to be, and now that he has raised the bar, he should release more details and supporting military records.

  2. LI, this is becoming cartoonish of you. “conflicting biographical sketches” What conflict? Has Ken ever said anywhere that he was NOT commissioned as a 2LT in the USMC? If he did, then you would be correct. Otherwise, give it up! You’re beginning to look foolish!

  3. RE, it’s odd for him NOT to mention it after doing so early on, and the latest explanation leaves unasnwered questions. It’s not my problem, it’s his. If the records support Kenney’s explanation, release them and put this to rest.

    • I don’t see this being a problem for Cooch. In fact, this is an opportunity — a part of his bio that he modestly downplayed is now getting widespread attention.

  5. [...] As Virginia Virtucon noted a couple days ago, Cuccinelli was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant following completion of the Marine Corps’s Office Candidate School (OCS) at Quantico, was deactivated while he completed law school, and after he got his JD the Marine Corps determined that they had enough lawyers. Cuccinelli requested a transfer to infantry which was denied and he was RIFed (reduction in force) out of the Corps. Cuccinelli doesn’t consider his service in the Marine Corps as significant as those that fought and died for this country while in the Corps and the other branches of the military. Now, the same loony-ass Brownlee supporters are demanding that Cuccinelli release his military records to prove this. [...]

  6. Cuch passed OCS. Yippee. He is wise not to pretend to have a miltary career when he didn’t.

John Brownlee is unwise to inflate his own military career as part of his campaign. He was what the infantry affectionately refers to as a “REMF”.

  7. [...] These stories are a perfect example of the problems with John Brownlee. For one, whenever he makes a decision or statement he goes off half-cocked: Whether it’s statements regarding the criminal impact that a drug treatment clinic will have; how his position on abortion is more conservative than Ken Cuccinelli’s — it isn’t; and Ken Cuccinelli’s military service in the Marine Corps.
