PWC County Exec. Craig Gerhart has announced his retirement.
I say GOOD RIDDANCE!
For too long, Gerhart has run roughshod over the Board of County Supervisors. I have long called for Gerhart to be fired from his post, specifically for undermining time and again and again the approved county policy pertaining to illegal aliens.
On too many other issues as well, rather than working behind the scenes to implement the various policies approved by the BOCS, Gerhart was speaking out publicly or to the press over his disagreements with the Board. I believe that he lost sight that he was not the elected official and that he viewed the County Exec. position in PWC along the lines of such positions in Maryland where they are elected.
The worst thing that Prince William County could do is replace Gerhart with one of his cronies or someone of similar inclinations. The Board should immediately undertake a nationwide search effort to find a top-notch administrator who will respect the will of the BOCS and the people of Prince William County, not seek to advance his or her own agenda.

First Gupta, now Gerhart, be still my heart could Griffith, Utz and Peacor shortly be following them out the door? ON WITH THE HOUSECLEANING!
Good riddance!
Now we just need to get rid of Ebert and Deane and then we’ll be rid of the Ol’ Boy Troika that has run the county as their personal fiefdoms.
I only hope that the county starts to look for a county executive that is not from the current system. The climate of go along to get along needs to end. PWC needs a fresh, energetic, and experienced person to take the county to the next level. PWC is one of the largest and wealthiest counties in the country. PWC will continue to grow which demands a new approach to government. The Supervisors need a person that will follow directions when given and to have sound judgment when no guidance is given.
I also hope the new CE will bring accountability back to the county as we are shocked by an ethical scandal in the OIT office and another one is being investigated.
Just my Thoughts-
Trent A. Barton
The one being investigated will rock things all the way up to Gerhart. Cover ups. Sexual harassment. Just wait…

I think Gerhart did a great job in providing stability to a County growing in many directions. He has held senior management positions through two recessions. As some know, the bills need to be paid despite cutbacks in the revenue streams. Kids dont stop going to schools during recessions….roads need to be built and payrolls met……..he did this and still maintained the County’s AAA bond rating….yes, there has been a carefully crafted embezzlement in IT and now some talk of a sexual harassment suit (scandal??? i dont think so, except for those who are always trashing County governemnt staff)….so fresh blood etc sounds nice but it still is the same old crappy sound bites that drive the far right!!!! Gerhart et al recognized that the County could not enforce federal laws that not even Congress could come to grips with—–so that left Corey and Stirrup to do the job….and then call it the “Rule of Law Resolution”!!! hohohoo
Ken,
What we will see happen is those who support an outside, independent person for the next County Exec. as championing reform while anyone who puts forth and supports a current county employee for the post being in support of the status quo. If it comes down to reform vs. status quo, reform will win 9 out of 10 times.
Good Thought Mr. Riley – In fact, Gerhart’s predecessor, Mr. Ewert was from way outside…….he did an outstanding job crafting the Rural Crescent that has condoned off thousands of acres from real estate development and he also brought proffers up to current levels so that developers pay for development and not the taxpayers…..so, I have nothing against an outsider….i do think that Gerhart did a great job…….and although he wouldnt admit it…….i think he got one piece of criticism too many from the pipsqueak in the Chairman’s Office!!!!
