It’s rare enough for an incumbent Delegate to be challenged in a primary. It’s even rarer for the Delegate to lose. Delegate Bob Hull of the 38th district (Falls Church) has lost to his challenger, school board member Kaye Kory, in close one. Kory won with 2,535 votes (50.65%) to Hull’s 2,469 (49.34%). There is more than a 1% difference between the two, so a recount is unlikely.
Kory racked up the votes around Lake Barcroft, the most native born and economically upscale part of the district. Hull did best in the more immigrant heavy parts of the district.
Delegate Hull was known as a reliable liberal vote in Richmond, but despite being in office for 16 years, he has not been a legislative leader. Hull coasted in the strongly Democrat district.
The new Democrat nominee does have a energetic Republican opponent in this now open seat, Danny Smith.
