Far be it from us to ever give credit to the DailyKooks, but they were among the top ten most accurate polls conducted in the 2008 presidential election according to Fordham Univ., beating out Gallup, Reuters, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc. So imagine our surprise when they released their new poll today on the Virginia governor’s race and the bounce that Creigh “What’s In YOUR Wallet?” Deeds got from his primary win has already evaporated. What was last week a 6-point Deed lead is now Bob McDonnell by +1.
But wait, the internals tell the real story.
McDonnell’s favorable rating is 55% and his unfavorable is 36% (+19%).
Deed’s favorable rating is 47% and his unfavorable is 35% (+12%).
McDonnell and Deeds both have 50% favorables among women, but McDonnell outpaces Deeds among men by 60% to 44%.
Among Independents, McDonnell leads 53%-46%.
McDonnell is viewed favorably by 36% of Democrats while Deeds only has 17% of Republicans who view him favorably.
(D.J. has his breakdown of the methodology over at his other home The Right Wing Liberal and it shows even better news than this for McDonnell.)
Bob McDonnell is well-positioned to win in November. Plus with moderate Republicans who supported Mark Warner and/or Tim Kaine coming home to the GOP, it will be very difficult for Deeds to assemble a winning coalition. He had a much better shot in 2005 before he ran hard left to capture the Dem nod proclaiming himself to be the “most progressive (i.e. liberal) candidate” in the race, didn’t meet a tax increase he didn’t like, and abandoned supporters of the Second Amendment.
