Looks like those crazy teabaggers are trying to draft Virgil Goode according to The WaPo.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Goode decided to run since he’s been using his campaign money to pay for campaign stuff through September (the end of the last reporting period), including phone and internet service, web hosting, and photography. And at the end of the last reporting period (September 30th, 2009), Goode still had $126,832 on hand.
The origin of the “North American Union” joke is a resolution that Virgil Goode sponsored back in 2007 which was to “[e]xpress[] the sense of Congress that the United States should not [...] enter into a North American Union with Mexico and Canada” (H.CON.RES.40). For those unfamiliar with the “North American Union”, it’s the favorite topic of those one-world government conspiracy theorists which think believe that NAFTA is the end of the United States and blah, blah, blah. If you’re unfamiliar with the “literature” on that particular theory, check out Wikipedia.
And it’s always fun when a ‘free-market constitutionalist’ (or whatever those teabaggers want from Goode) is opposed to free-trade. Because capitalism is bad, mkay?

Wow I didn’t expect to see this kind of trash on such a good blog. Way to write off a pretty damn big portion of the conservative movement.
RightOnGallows…way to promote “ISOLATIONISM” dude.
Get a grip. All the world’s economy is connected. If you withdraw back into the shell, the world passes you by.
Stop bastardizing a great movement by conservatives, democrats and independents to take the government back by muddying the water with your anti-capitalist drivel.
I’m not sure if Right on Gallows was referring to free traders, or Tim’s use of the word “teabaggers.” Maybe you can clarify?
I have never known the Tea Party movement to be associated with isolationism.
So opposition to NAFTA automatically makes you an isolationist.
There is a case to be made that NAFTA will restrict free trade, because it gives preferential treatment to Canada and Mexico. I know some “free-traders” who are opposed to it based on the fact that it is a bilateral treaty instead of two separate unilateral treaties.
Goode is much better then the Dem that is currently serving the district. One thing “conservatives” bash those in the Tea party for is their hope to find someone who they can agree with 100% on all of the issues. Well, there is one thing you might not like about Goode and you end up insulting a bunch of people.
If the GOP acted like the GOP, there would not be a need for the tea party.
Stellar logic there Steven, using your logic, after all, the WTO (and its predecessor like the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) restricts free-trade because not everyone is a member.
And citizenofmanassas, if the “tea party” movement wasn’t populated with crazies and hypocrites, I would have a lot more respect for it.
A congressman should represent the citizens of his district.
Virgil Goode is a great representative at multiple levels; he says what most of Central Virginians think, and he is also like the people in the district.
While it is not necessary for a representative to look like the constituency, it is very helpful when that representative shares common values and the core philosophy of those he represents in the legislature. For example, an African American, like J.C. Watts, Jr., did not look like the majority of his constituents, but his evangelical background and conservative core values made him a great fit to speak on behalf of his Oklahoma neighbors.
I miss Virgil Goode’s voice in Congress. He often said what needed to be said, when no other representative had the courage to speak plainly and truthfully about the issues.
RUN VIRGIL, RUN!
Timothy,
I am not saying that I am for restricting NAFTA necessarily, I do think that America could have gotten a better deal out of unilateral treaties.Do you think that the WTO always has the United States’ best interests at heart?
American’s can get a better deal out of unilateral treaties that are not subject to international bodies.
Mr. Watson—
They are members, one and all. I do not mind their participation. I do mind that they try to commandeer the movement and alienate the massive following of democrats and independents that actually make it lethal to Congress members who do not pay it mind..

@Steven
The WTO ensures that are a basic level of trade rights between all countries in the group.
If countries want to enter into separate deals with each other, they can, as long as there don’t violate preexisting WTO rules (e.g., they can’t increase trade protections against a fellow WTO member).
This is exactly what NAFTA and proposed agreements like the United States-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement do.
