Allen Honors MLK While DPVA Takes The Low Road

Many people marked yesterday’s observation of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday in a solemn, respectful way with Gov. Bob McDonnell issuing this following statement:

Statement of Governor Bob McDonnell on Commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

RICHMOND— Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement today in recognition of the commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the Commonwealth.

“Today we pause to remember a great leader, statesman, visionary and activist who helped inspire a nation to believe in a shared dream of equality, understanding and inclusion that was spawned by our Founding Fathers, grew though the travails of generations of Americans, and resulted in the greatest nation in the world. From the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955, to his leading role in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and his unforgettable oration during the 1963 March on Washington, Dr. King was an inspirational leader who was able to spread his dream of peace and understanding to a nation in need to self-reflection and reform. His non-violent message of universal equality and justice advanced the cause of freedom in our country and influenced generations to come. Through his transcendent words and selfless actions—and the ultimate sacrifice of his life in the cause of the American dream—Dr. King enabled our nation to reflect and ultimately grow into the melting pot of opportunity that Virginians and Americans enjoy today. I encourage us all to pause today and remember the sacrifices of this great leader. His words are stitched in the fabric of our American tapestry and his actions will forever influence Americans and human kind.”

Fmr. U.S. Sen. / Gov. George Allen took to the pages of the WashPo to praise King in an op-ed that wrapped up with the following lines:

This is a day that we, as Independents, Democrats and Republicans; liberals, moderates, and conservatives; people of all races can come together with unity of purpose to honor a man who personifies what makes America a great country.

Dr. King proved that a determined, positive person can come from a humble background and yet make a profound impact on our communities, states, country and the world. It is in that spirit that I take time to recognize and salute a man who made America a beacon that gave light to a dark world and we are all the better for it.

So, how did Virginia’s Democrat Party respond?  Did they use this opportunity to exhort the better angels of our nature in the way that Dr. King strove to do?

Nah.  As with partisan Democrats, everything has to be political and used as a weapon to bludgeon those with whom you disagree.  No one ever accused the DPVA of keeping it classy…
