Santorum Certified IA Winner, Gingrich Takes Lead In SC, Perry Drops Out

What was it that the Mitt Romney campaign said after the unofficial tally in Iowa?  I believe it was “A win is a win.”  Except when it isn’t…

The Iowa GOP has certified that Rick Santorum is the winner of the Iowa Caucuses by 34 votes, not Romney by 8.  Actually, they are certifying that he got more votes than Mitt Romney did (which in my book is what constitutes a win), but are saying that results from 8 other precincts will never be known for certain and thus they are saying the 2012 Caucus was a “split decision.”

And so ends any credibility that Iowa should ever have in the nominating process in the future.

Meanwhile, Romney’s 20 point lead in South Carolina that had eroded to an 11 point lead has now turned into a 3 point deficit in polling from last night as he now trails Newt Gingrich 32%-29% who is bracing for an onslaught from tonight’s ABC Nightline interview with his ex-wife.

Word just in that Rick Perry is dropping out and endorsing fellow flat-tax advocate Gingrich ahead of the SC Primary where Perry was only polling.

Finally, Mitt Romney has a 200-page opposition research file compiled in 2008 by the McCain campaign dropped on his head online as well as news that he’s stashing money in the Cayman Islands.  Couple that with losing IA, Newt’s surge and Perry dropping out and this could prove to be a very bad week for Romney.
