…And then they came for me.

It was all easy to dismiss when Obama and his band of merry liberals came for rich people, or banks, or small businesses, or countless others who depended on liberty to exist and thrive.

How about when he stripped the religious freedoms of the largest denomination in the country, 25% of Americans- Roman Catholics?

I don’t often talk about my faith in public context, for no particular reason- perhaps because I often felt protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. But now that Obama has chosen to disregard that one (along with the 2nd, 4th, 10th and others), I have to say something.

It’s my faith he’s trampling. This time he came for me.

The funny thing is, Obama’s liberals are trying to say this doesn’t matter- polling says it doesn’t. He’s trying to minimize this, without understanding the fundamental issue. It’s not contraception. It’s religious freedom.

You simply cannot force people who do not believe in something for reasons of conscience to do that thing. That is the reason Mohammad Ali couldn’t be forced to go to Vietnam- government does not have the power to compel citizens who conscientiously oppose something. Not only will the Supreme Court strike this down- probably unanimously- but Obama just handed Republicans a major issue by reminding voters, especially Moderates and Conservatives, what they don’t like most about him: his overriding tendency to abuse government power to force policy down the throats of the unwilling.

It’s in his DNA. He can’t help it. He can’t stop trying to force his Socialist beliefs down the throats of American citizens and businesses.

This time, will Americans be wise to it? Will Americans stand up to defend their most basic rights and freedoms against a government clearly out of control- or will they sit back and let Obama turnthem around and do this to them one more time?

Even if you’re not a Catholic, just remember… next time he could come for YOU. Help us make a stand here. Contact your Congressman, Senators Webb and Warner, Tim Kaine and George Allen, and the White House and tell them to stand up for Religious liberty.

Webb doesn’t care, he’s out of the game; Kaine needs the Christian vote so will defy Obama on this one issue to try and get elected. If he gets elected he will vote with the party. George Allen is a Christian so we know he is definitely against Obama on this along with my Congressman Rob Wittman.

I too am really pissed at Obama/DSS for what they Did Not HAVE to do…….downright stupid…….one thought though and i would appreciate comments…….isnt it so that all of the servicces in question…abortion, contraceptives….already in place in most health care plans…….google Blue Cross and abortion……..and there are many many connections…that doesnt detract from the stupidity of what DSS/Obama did, but is seems that this type of benhvior has been going on forever????

      Ken,

Non-Catholics can do what they like when they provide insurance or health services. The issue here (as you yourself can see) is forcing Catholics to insure or provide medical services and products that run counter to their beliefs.

Tim Kaine does not understand (or does not care about) the logical connection between government takeover of health care and these sorts of imposition on freedom. Just wait until after the election and Kaine will have forgotten all about this little disagreement. Kaine and Obama have agreed to disagree — for now.

Why did Obama do it? Politically, I am not understanding it. Is it for the hard core, far left, base?

      LL,

I think it’s pretty simple. He calculated that he could afford to lose a % of Catholics in exchange for shoring up his left-wing base. Catholics tend to be a divided faction of the electorate and a number of them are independent (and traditionally they are Democrats). I think he may have also calculated that many Catholics would vote for him regardless of this policy (as many are at odd with the bishops when it comes to the issues of contraception and birth control). What I don’t think he counted on was that many liberal Catholics are furious about this move and consider it an affront to the freedom of religion. He is going to have to give on this issue in the end, or the backlash will be very severe. Republicans, meanwhile are looking to word this issue in a way that appeals to Catholics wo may have voted Obama this November, particularly independents, and also Hispanic voters.

I actually think this is being done on purpose by the Obama machine to keep the Republican nominee from being chosen. This is rallying people behind Rick Santorum. The Republicans are fighting among themselves and Obama is able to go out raise lots of money on this issue. This is galvanizing the far left feminist vote and fundraising ability (see what they did with Planned Parenthood and Susan G Komen last week).Obama will eventually cave, but use that opportunity to say that he can work with Congress. He will also have deeper pockets too. He also will think that Catholics will forget this issue too. Whether this strategy works is another issue.

      Anon,

Your point about the timing is definately interesting. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING Obama and his White House is without some kind of political calculation (in the Chicago manner, of course).

So does that mean he’ll attack Iran to keep the other candidates from keeping Ron Paul in the general election fold?

The Catholic Church is winning the messaging war here. Ultimately the Obama administration will back down and “settle” with the Catholic Church, and perhaps other religious institutions. At that point the remaining private employers who still want to object based on a conscience clause will have no one less to fight for them.

The Catholic Church has an opportunity to fight for freedom on a major moral issue beyond the borders of the church. I hope they don’t just give in on the whole policy in order to obtain an exemption just for the church.

This is rope-a-dope by the Obama campaign…calculated to please his base voters, and early enough in the campaign that it won’t do lasting damage when he reverses himself because of some new heartfound respect for the Catholic faith. Plus, the charge coming out of the White House that Romney doesn’t have a leg to stand on in criticizing it because of a similar provision in Massachusetts (right or wrong) probably immunizes them from some of the most damaging attacks.

I hope I’m wrong. It would be great to be debating this in October. But I don’t think the President has enough courage in his convictions to let that happen. He’ll back down.

Obama has to watch out because of the four remaining GOP candidates, TWO are Catholic (Santorum and Gingrich) and the top two VP prospects (at least for Romney) are Catholic as well — McDonnell and Rubio. The chances that a Catholic will occupy at least one spot on the GOP ticket in November are pretty high.
