Well, duh!
This is supposed to shock and dismay voters? I don’t think so even if the NY Times finds it to be those things and more.
Mitt Romney described almost half of Americans as “dependent upon government” during a private reception with donors earlier this year and said those voters will likely support President Obama because they believe they are “entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.”
. . .
In one video segment, Mr. Romney described how his campaign is writing off “47 percent of the people” who will vote for Mr. Obama “no matter what.” He adds that those people “are people who pay no income tax” and says “so our message of low taxes doesn’t connect.”
Mr. Romney said that “my job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”
. . .
Gail Gitcho, the communications director for Mr. Romney, said in a statement that Mr. Romney is “concerned about the growing number of people who are dependent on the federal government, including the record number of people who are on food stamps, nearly one in six Americans in poverty, and the 23 million Americans who are struggling to find work.”
The only shocking thing here is that Romney actually called Obama and the Democrats out on exactly how they are trying to hold on to power in perpetuity.
If anything, this will solidify him with voters who do work hard and pay taxes.

I would like to amend my remarks by giving voice to all of our concerns that President Obama has managed to set historical levels of food stamps, unemployment, under employment, and now an unprecedented number of people moving onto Social Security disability which further strains Social Security, which was intended to be a retirement system.
Ronald Reagan would no doubt remind us tonight that compassion should be measured by how many people no longer need government programs instead of by how many are served by them. By that measure, as well as every economic measure, the Obama presidency has utterly failed.
All of us have the right to expect our fellow citizens to take personal responsibility for their lives and contribute to society to the best of their God-given talents. This country was built by people who had but a small fraction of the resources that we enjoy today. The root of every problem that we are experiencing in this non-recovery can be traced to bad government led by incompetent leaders who do not understand America. For our sake and more importantly for our children’s sake we must once and for all break the dependency on government and politicians.
But my most important duty if elected as president will be to make security my constant focus. When our people are at risk, I will act to protect lives and not feelings. Americans will be able to travel abroad in safety, whether on business, vacation, governmental and military service. And we will stand up even if there is a cost to be paid for the First Amendment and fundamental individual rights. This country is going to live free. And my administration will never even contemplate limiting your freedom of speech or favor any one religion or group, or use a private citizen as the means to divert attention from a failed policy.
Thank you for making this opportunity available to speak you, and good night.
No duh…..first, we must examine the types of ‘dependency’ As one exxample, do we put student loans in the same basket as food stamps? And what about corporate dependency in the form of tax breaks? Also, tax breaks for the rich – thousands of millioniares do not pay taxes. As usual, conservatives over-simplify things ad nauseum
Do the thousands of millionaires you cite have income subject to taxation in the year in which they pay no taxes? Remember, the income tax taxes income, not savings. The savings has already been taxed when it was first earned. If they sell stocks at a profit, do they not pay capital gains taxes?
Don’t get me started on student loans. That is the single biggest driver in the spiraling cost of education. By offering more and more federal student loan assistance, the government hasn’t made going to college more affordable — they’ve created an outrageous inflationary level that cannot be sustained.
When did stating a fact become a gaffe? Now, granted, the statement is rough around the edges (he was talking to supporters and did not know he was being taped), and I wouldn’t completely write off the 47% (some may have complete disillusionment with Obama). But again, what he said is factually accurate and a lot of people find it refreshing to actually hear him say it.
