Pew Research poll surprise, Romney up by 4%!

Whoever said debates don’t matter, they were dead wrong.  After Romney’s terrific showing in last week’s debate the Pew Research Center now has Romney up by 4% over Obama among likely voters.  Romney has also improved on nearly every issue, including the deficit, taxes and unemployment.   He now leads Obama on all three of those issues.  Romney’s overall image has improved, Obama’s has declined.   Check out the whole story, there’s lots of good information, including this graph:

A good start and very encouraging. However, there’s about a month left and a lot can happen. If Romney can continue to perform well and continues to shine in the remaining debates, I think he’s got a shot.

Sorry LL and ND!! But you do know that the challenger ALWAYS gets a meaningful jump on the incumbent at the first debate……….like the debate gives the challenger more de facto strength as it makes him more of an equal. Just watch the 2nd debate when Obama beats Mutt up with all of the gaffes…….let him apologize for his 47% remark, etc.

Ken, that’s not always the case. However, I must admit that Romney did get quite the jump. I agree that the question is whether or not he can sustain it. Whether Obama beats Romney in the 2nd or 3rd debates, well, that remains to be seen.

Thought you might enjoy this piece from the UK:

    The highlights:

When President Barack Obama stepped off the stage in Denver last week the 60 million Americans watching the debate against Mitt Romney already knew it had been a disaster for him.
But what nobody knew, until now, was that Obama believed he had actually won.
In an extraordinary insight into the events leading up to the 90 minute showdown which changed the face of the election, a Democrat close to the Obama campaign today reveals that the President also did not take his debate preparation seriously, ignored the advice of senior aides and ignored one-liners that had been prepared to wound Romney.

-Obama believes he’d got the better of Romney as he walked off stage to the dismay of his aides, according to a Democrat close to the campaign

-The President failed to prepare properly, opting instead to visit the Hoover Dam the day before the showdown

-Democrat claims he was so disdainful of Romney that he didn’t think he needed to even engage with him

-Had one-liners on 47% prepared but chose not to use them

I cant imagine how or why Obama thought he won the debate when everyone else thought he lost. Well, this will put him on his toes and we will see. Four factors left: the two remaining debates; Biden’s performance, and who screws up the most in the final weeks….Obama or Romney………….i believe Obama will win on all four counts!!!!

Sure, Ryan is the ‘numbers guy’………….and Romney, Ryan et al are scared to death that people will ask about the numbers and they will find out where the numbers go…….first, tax cuts for the rich, voucher programs for medicare..come to mind…………..you like those Monk, c’mo, tell me you like those!!!!

  5. thebulletproofmonk

That’s because you’re demonstratedly dumber than a bag of hammers, Ken.
Ryan is about to wipe the floor with Biden tomorrow. He IS the numbers guy for his boss. He knows the numbers and the process better than Mitt does.
Then wqe get to watch Oama overreach and try to hit Romney harder in the next debate, only to watch his personality index (which has been high) go down because he’s no longer seen as a nice guy.

    • Ken Reynolds

You know in your heart Monk that Obama will mop the floor with Romney in the next debate. You know in your heart too Monk, that Romney changed his positions on everything (and also got to say he didnt mean the 47% remark on the day after the debate). And just watch what the seasoned pro Biden will do with amateur Ryan tomorrow night. And finally, you badly misspelled “demonstratedly” as an adjective in calling me “dumber that a bag of hammers” Who do you think you are: George Bush???!!!!
