Live Iowa Caucus Results – OPEN THREAD

Buzzfeed has live Iowa Caucus results utilizing Google Maps.  As of 8:51 p.m. EST (7:51 p.m. Iowa), the early results look promising for Rick Santorum.

9:09 p.m. – Santorum, Mitt Romney and Ron Paul are all neck and neck in the 23-24% range in those counties reporting and some of them are already north of 50% in.  This holds and Santorum is the big story out of Iowa and Romney’s ceiling remains in the low to mid-20s.

9:27 p.m. – Romney continues to crater in key counties of Polk and Warren around Des Moines where he was expected to top 30%, only reaching low 20s.  Only Dallas County has him above that level.  All three top candidates are tied at 23% now.

10:13 p.m. – Santorum 24%, Romney 24%, Paul 22%.

10:25 p.m. – FOX News is reporting they are projecting Newt Gingrich to come in 4th, Rick Perry 5th and Michele Bachmann 6th.  DUH.  That has been self evident for the past 90 minutes or so.

10:46 p.m. – 81% reporting and Romney has a 500 vote lead over Santorum for a 25% to 24% lead.  Gingrich beating Perry for the top spot of the second tier candidates (4th place) is just as meaningless as this Onion headline.

10:5o p.m. – Sioux City is still out, the last major population center yet to report.  FOX was reporting earlier that this could be a good county for Santorum.

10:52 p.m. – Woodbury County where Sioux City is located has 59% reporting and Santorum leads there by 5%.  Santorum and Romney now tied at 25% with Santorum holding a 45 vote lead.

10:58 p.m. – Ron Paul will finish third.  Drudge is reporting there is currently just a 13 vote difference between Romney and Santorum.

11:33 p.m. – Santorum leads by 129 votes with 93% of the vote in.  No recounts in the caucuses.  Only a few precincts in a handful of counties remain out — some in Santorum strongholds and others in Romney ones.

11:42 p.m. – 96% of the vote in and Santorum leads by 109.

11:50 p.m. – Rick Perry is the Phil Gramm of 2012.

12:14 a.m. – Wrapping up for the night as Santorum is coming out to speak.  Santorum leads by just 37 votes with 61 precincts still out – 50 located in counties where Romney is leading and 11 in counties where Santorum leads.

  1. It’s his time to surge, just like so many others have had their time to surge in Iowa. His timing is better than their’s.

    1. I’m not sure why Romney would roll this out now, it just reinforces that Romney is the “moderate” and/or “establishment”. I am using quotations purposefully.

From the lense of 2008 Romney was the “conservative” while McCain was the establishment, oh how times have changed.
