Salahi’s Gubernatorial Candidacy Filing Invalid — Wrong Date, No Petition Signatures

Stop the presses at the Washington Post, Politico and TMZ who were all so giddy over the prospects of TMZ-described “reality TV famewhore” Tareq Salahi running for Virginia Governor as a Republican that they didn’t bother to look into the filing itself to see if it was valid.

As I pointed out yesterday, the Declaration of Candidacy misstated the election date for the 2013 Republican Primary, incorrectly listing it as Nov. 6, 2013, which is the General Election Date.  The correct date is June 11, 2013.

In addition, the Declaration of Candidacy form says:

THIS DECLARATION OF CANDIDACY MUST BE FILED WITH PETITIONS CONTAINING THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF SIGNATURES OF REGISTERED VOTERS

In other words, the declaration “must be filed” along with the required number of valid petition signatures to get on the ballot.  In order to qualify, candidates must submit at least 10,000 valid signatures before March 28, 2013, along with this document.  Given Salahi was sued by AG Ken Cuccinelli on Monday and Salahi told the WashPo that he was running to avenge the lawsuit and his filing took place on Tuesday, I highly doubt that he was able to gather that many valid signatures overnight when the likes of Rick Perry, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich were not able to do so over a period of several months to get on the ballot for the presidential primary.

Finally, take a look at the form and you will see that it is notarized and subscribed and sworn to by the “candidate.”  Well, how could Salahi subscribe and swear to filing this properly without the required petitions?  In doing so, did he swear to a false statement?  At least on the Certificate of Candidate Qualification, knowingly making any untrue statement or entry on that document is a felony under Virginia law and can result in a fine of up to $2,500 and/or up to 10 years in prison as well as losing your right to vote.  As if this guy didn’t have enough problems as it is, does he really want to add THAT to his list just for another 15 minutes of fame?

He needs to just give up this and “Be Good To Himself.”

He could have just done a statement of organization. Of course this is likely just a stunt and will go nowhere.

Exactly, Freddie. A statement of organization, like what Bolling and Cuccinelli have done, would have been the appropriate first-step, not this.

I’m not sure he’s even a Republican…I think he was a Tim Kaine donor because I remember when the White House crashing story broke, Kaine said “If you’d told me somebody from Virginia had crashed the gate at the White House, that’s who I would have guessed it was.” or something to that effect.
Salahi would probably be a good politician, he’s a natural born con man.
